A thought struck me a little bit ago (no, it didn't hurt) about the noise and pictures we are immersed in on a daily basis. This thought came because of something I read in The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Beating Writer's Block
, where it said the block is not caused by an *absence* of thought but rather an *over-abundance* of it.
What does that have to do with anything, you ask? Consider this. Could it be that A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. are caused not by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, but by the overwhelming technological B.S. that we find ourselves immersed in on a daily basis?
Even just here at home, I am immersed in the noise of the heater under my desk, the noise made by a game my house-mate is playing on her computer, the noises her one-year-old daughter makes as she plays in her playpen, the heat under my desk competing with the cooler air of the apartment around me... you get the idea.
Now consider this. Finding a nice quiet place to be, just be, for at least half-an-hour a day (or every-other day, if that is your choice). For the first few days, your mind will overwhelm you, now that there is nothing else to take your attention away from it. After a few days of that, your brain starts to quiet down, questing for something, *anything*, to think about. This is when you say to your brain/mind, "Today we are going to work on this!" Then!, work on it! The next day, finish up what you started the day before, or start on something new. The point is, you are no longer immersed in the noise and lights of out world. You are, instead, immersed in your own thoughts, in your own place and at your own time. Just give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
