I have a supposition for you. Before I posit it, though, let me give you a little datum - Tesla's funding was pulled because he wanted to give electricity away for free!
Suppose, though, that we find a way to give him the last laugh? (Suppose) There is enough electromagnetic energy floating around to power a car - microwaves from cell towers; the bleed-off from high-tension wires; the radiation from the Sun itself, in the form of UV, IR and other unseeable (to humans) waves of energy. (Suppose) We/someone figures out a way to harness this energy? You can't tax it. You can't control it. You can't charge for it.
Who's laughing now?
